appleSome Handy Definitions:

Freeware

Software that is in the public domain. This means that the software can be freely distributed without charge. The authors still retain all rights to the programs and are protected by the copyright laws.

Shareware

Software that gives the user the chance to try out a program before purchasing it. If you continue to use the program after a set number of days, usually 30, then you are required to register the program and pay a registration fee. This fee, usually nominal, helps the author defray the costs of production. By supporting the shareware author you help to promote good programming practices as he is more likely to continue to improve the program through upgrades.

Compressed Files

Most files that you download will be compressed and you will need a decompression utility program like WinZip (shareware) for Windows machines or Stuffit-Expander (freeware) for Macs and Windows. These utilities allow you to do faster downloads and then extract the programs onto your hard drive. These two programs are shareware, and you can download demos to try them out.

Viruses

You should be wary of downloading executable programs to your machine. It is always a good idea to have a virus scanning program handy to check everything you download. Go to Download.com and search for Virus Protection for both Mac and Windows.
