"The Firing Range"
The central part of the old barracks was connected to the firing range by a very long vaulted corridor. The seven condemned men started in there one by one, flanked by soldiers from an S.S. unit. Gerbier was about in the middle of the line. The student was at the head, the peasant at the back. The condemned men advanced slowly. They were still wearing their irons on their legs. The corridor had no opening to the outside. Light bulbs set at regular intervals lit it with an uneven light. The shadows of the condemned men and those of their armed guards formed a sort of giant and wavering escort on the walls. In the ringing silence of the walkway, the booted steps of the soldiers made a deep and muffled sound, and, at the same time, one heard the clinking of the chains of the condemned men and the grinding of their irons.
"That makes a kind of symphony," Gerbier said to himself. "I wish the boss could hear it."
Gerbier remembered the expression Luke Jardie had when he would talk about music. And Gerbier was astonished to meet that face in the vaulted corridor. The chains clinked. The irons ground.
