B. Translation of the Passage (p. 83, l. 11 - p. 84, l. 30):

I was not disappointed. The porter in front of the door, the courtyard full of snow resembled the images from my memory. As for my father, he had made a tremendous effort so that my day would be perfect. He had bought brand new toys, ordered a marvelous meal, and prepared, for nightfall, a small fireworks in the yard.
Daddy was a very good man, but extremely clumsy. Everything that he had organized with such love failed. The new toys only served to increase my longing for former toys which I demanded and which he could not find. The fine dinner, poorly prepared by servants that were no longer supervised by any woman, made me sick. One of the rockets from the fireworks fell on the roof, into the firelplace of my old bedroom and set a rug on fire. In order to put out his beginning of a house fire, the whole household had to form a fire brigade, and my father burned his hand, with the result that this day that he had wished to be so happy left me with the memory of terrifying flames and the sad odor of bandages.
When my nanny came to get me, she found me in tears. I was quite young, but I had a strong sense of subtleties of feeling. I knew that my father loved me, that he had done his best, and that he had not succeeded. I felt sorry for him, and, at the same time, I was a little ashamed of him. I was trying to hide these thoughts from him, I was trying to smile, and I was weeping.
