In Memoriam : Philip Brett 1937-2002
“Philip was awarded The Eva Judd O'Meara Award for the best review published in Notes in 1999 (Benjamin Britten editions). It was a distinct pleasure to work with him on the review -- he was a superb scholar, wonderful writer, and was keenly delighted with contributing a review to Notes.” (-notice forwarded by Darwin Scott) ....

In Memoriam : Eileen Jackson Southern 1920-2002
“The CBMR has received word of the death of Eileen Jackson Southern on
October 13, 2002, at the age of 82. She was a pioneer in the study of black
music: her book The Music of Black Americans, now in its third edition
(New York: W.W. Norton, 1997) is encyclopedic in its coverage of black music
in the United States, from colonial times to the present.” (-notice forwarded by Suzanne Flandreau) ....

“While I never met Dr. Southern, I feel like an heir to her work when I was
helping Dr. Josephine Wright of the College of Wooster as her assistant
for American Music (1994-1997).  I have many fond memories hearing about
this visionary in the field of American musicology.  I, like many
others, used Southern's Music of Black Americans (and its supplemental
Readings book) in my African-American music history course at Wooster.” (-notice forwarded by Thomas Pease) ....

In a world newly rife with cliched sound designs, it's always exciting to come up completely fresh with something out of the GRM oven - I use Freeze and Doppler a lot, and especially use the parameter morph feature for transition effects. The Comb Filters help me generate great bass growls and pedals from rhythmic sources. (Gerry Bassermann - Freelance sound designer, consultant, musician) ....

Digital Collections : Charles H. Templeton Ragtime Sheet Music Collection
Charles Templeton collected a wide range of music memorabilia. Included among his treasures is a collection of some 22,000 pieces of sheet music from late nineteenth and early twentieth century America. The sheet music illustrates a broad spectra of music genres, from the ragtime of Scott Joplin to the dixieland of W. C. Handy to the smooth ballads of Irving Berlin to the stirring patriotic anthems of John Phillips Sousa and George M. Cohan to the early roots of big band sounds  ....

The Free Music Machine (1948), by Percy Grainger
The ‘Free Music Machine’ was created by musician and singer Burnett Cross and the Australian composer Percy Grainger.  Grainger a virtuoso Pianist and pupil of Busoni, had been developing his idea of “free music” since 1900: based on eighth tones and complete rhythmic freedom and unconventionally notated on graph paper. Grainger had experimented using collections of Theremins and changing speeds of recorded sounds on phonograph disks and eventually developed his own instruments. Grainger’s experiments with random music composition predated those of John Cage by 30 years with “Random Round” written in the 1920’s   .....

I'll tell you a strange story. Okay, it sounds screwy, but I checked it out a little, and I think this guy was on the level. He used to come into the bar a couple of years back, just now and then, not too regular. Pretty young, but he had that saggy look, like too many years of wife trouble or something. I see a lot of them like that  .....
