General Education rationale: This course will provide students
with ways to approach the quantitativeinformation that they are certain to
encounter in later coursework at Eastern Michigan University, throughout
their careers, and in daily life. The emphasis is on learning methods
for comprehending, analyzing and using quantitative information and on techniques
for using data to inform decisions about real world events and problems.
For these reasons, MATH110E will satisfy the Quantitative Reasoning requirement
in the general education program, Education for Participation in the Global
Community.
In addition, MATH110E is specifically designed to meet the needs of students
that are looking toward becoming elementary school teachers. While the content
of this class mirrors that of MATH110, the examples, applications, and projects
are designed to help you make connections to the K-5 classroom and help you
to begin to think about how you will teach young children to make sense of
some beginning mathematical concepts.
-
Very Important Notice:
This course is ONLY for students intending to major in Elementary Education
or Special Education-Elementary. If you are uncertain whether or not you
should be taking this class, talk to your instructor or an advisor in your
program.
-
Grading: We will have 2 tests on Thursday, May 22 and Tuesday,
June 10 and a final exam on Tuesday, June 24 . In addition 4 quizzes
will be given as indicated on the course schedule,
and I will collect some homework including including two quatitative reasoning
projects. The details of the homework will be discussed in
class. If you miss a class and are not sure which sections will
be covered on a quiz or test, you will be able to find this information in
Assignments, Quizzes and Tests .
The point distribution for tests, quizzes, and the final will be:
-
2 tests @100 ----- 200 points
-
Best 3 out of 4 quizzes ----- 30 points
-
Homework ----- 60 points
-
Final Exam ------100 or 200 points
(If your grade on the final exam is better than your average going into the
final then I will count your final 200 points. Otherwise you final
will be counted as 100 points. In other words, I will count your final
double if it helps your grade.)
-
Prerequisites: The prerequisites for Math 110E are Placement
or at least a C in Math 098 or Math 098B or Math 104, Math 105, Math 107,
Math 108 or Math 118 .
-
Other things to note:
-
You are encouraged to bring a calculator to class. You may use calculators
on assignments, quizzes and tests. A graphing calculator is not required
but has features that might be useful for some topics in this class.
-
Some of our assignments will use spread sheets. We will use Microsoft
Excel in class but you may use another program if you prefer. Any software
we use in class will be available in 502 Pray-Harrold..
-
Since I hand out solutions to quizzes shortly after they are taken, I do
not like to give make ups on quizzes. If you miss a quiz for a valid
reason please talk to me and I will arrange to count some later quiz double.
Tests may be made up if you have a valid reason for missing the test
and you talk to me in advance.
-
Tutoring is available in the Mathematics Student Services Center located
on the second floor of Pray-Harrold. Their hours will be announced
shortley after the semester begins.
